Official JSA Jobs → For lawyers looking to move into a larger platform or deepen their practice-area specialisation, the latest hiring activity at JSA is worth a close look. The firm’s official careers portal currently shows a substantial set of roles across Mumbai, Gurugram, Bengaluru and New Delhi, with vacancies spanning both associate and senior-associate levels as well as more experienced positions. The important point is that candidates should not treat a law-firm vacancy as a generic “send CV” opportunity. Each practice has a different hiring logic. A Banking & Finance team will evaluate deal exposure very differently from a Litigation team; a Real Estate role may require strong title-diligence and state-law experience; and a senior M&A position will usually place far more weight on transaction ownership, drafting ability and client management than a junior associate vacancy. Accuracy note: The roles below are drawn from JSA’s official careers/job pages available at the time of publication. Job listings may be filled, edited or removed without notice. The official JSA portal should always be treated as the final source. Current JSA openings worth checking JSA’s current experienced-lawyer listings cover several major commercial practice areas. The following roles are particularly relevant for lawyers seeking a lateral move. Where the public listing provides a specific PQE requirement, it is stated below; where it does not, candidates should open the official listing rather than assume eligibility. 01 Senior Associate / Principal Associate Practice: Mergers & Acquisitions Location: Mumbai Experience: 6+ years Job Code: MC0081 Corporate • M&A • PE 02 Senior Associate – Real Estate Practice: Real Estate Location: Mumbai Experience: 5–7 years PQE Job Code: MC0080 Transactions • Title Due Diligence • RERA 03 Senior Associate / Associate Practice: General Corporate / M&A / PE / VC Location: Gurugram Job Code: JSA-GGN-GCR-09 Check the official listing for the latest PQE and eligibility requirements. Corporate • Transactions 04 Associate – Litigation Practice: Litigation Location: Bengaluru Job Code: BC0044 Applicants should review the official job page for the current experience criteria and matter profile. Disputes • Litigation 05 Associate – Banking & Finance Practice: Banking & Finance Location: Mumbai Experience: 2–3 years PQE on Job Code MC0071 Job Code: MC0071 Finance • Transactions 06 Associate – Labour & Employment Practice: Labour & Employment Location: Gurugram Job Code: GC0041 Check the live listing for the current PQE and specific experience expected. Employment • Advisory These are not the only lawyer vacancies visible on JSA’s official careers pages. At the time of publication, the portal also lists roles in General Corporate, M&A/PE, Banking & Finance, Corporate Real Estate and New Delhi-based hiring, among others. That makes the portal particularly useful for candidates who want to compare openings by location, practice area and seniority rather than applying blindly to a single post. What JSA appears to be looking for The firm’s individual job descriptions show a recurring emphasis on practical experience rather than qualifications alone. For example, the Mumbai Senior Associate / Principal Associate M&A role seeks candidates with strong transactional experience, especially around mergers and acquisitions, private equity, strategic investments, general corporate advisory and real-estate M&A. The listing also highlights drafting, analytical ability and client-management skills. The Real Estate Senior Associate position is even more practice-specific. It calls for lawyers with 5–7 years of post-qualification experience and expects end-to-end familiarity with transaction documentation, title diligence, land and development matters, RERA compliance, registrations and state-specific property laws. An LL.B. from a recognised university and Bar Council enrolment are stated as mandatory for that role. JSA’s Banking & Finance listing for Mumbai, meanwhile, indicates that relevant law-firm experience matters. The role covers financing transactions such as structured finance, real-estate finance, acquisition finance, project finance, securitisation and general banking products. Candidates with fintech exposure may also have an advantage depending on the position. How to decide which role you should apply for A common mistake in lateral hiring is applying to every role whose PQE range roughly matches your own. A stronger strategy is to map your actual matter experience against the job description. Before applying, identify the matters you can genuinely discuss in an interview and the documents you have personally worked on. Corporate / M&A: quantify transactions, sectors, deal sizes where permitted, your role in diligence, drafting and closing, and whether you directly coordinated with clients or counterparties. Banking & Finance: identify the financing products you have worked on, lender or borrower-side exposure, security documentation and closing responsibilities. Real Estate: highlight title diligence, property documentation, leasing, acquisition, development, RERA and state-law exposure. Litigation: specify forums, stages of proceedings, drafting handled, research ownership, briefing experience and the kinds of disputes you have worked on. Employment: distinguish advisory work from contentious matters, investigations, workforce restructuring, employment documentation and transaction support. If your experience is adjacent rather than identical, your application needs to explain the transferability clearly. A generic statement such as “I am interested in corporate law” rarely helps. A much stronger approach is to show that the matters you have handled already involve the same drafting, research, diligence, negotiation or regulatory analysis that the target team requires. EduLaw Career Tip Your CV should read like a matter sheet, not a biography. For experienced-lawyer hiring, every bullet should help the recruiter understand what you have actually done. Replace vague lines such as “worked on various corporate matters” with precise, confidentially appropriate descriptions of the transaction or dispute, your responsibility and the skill demonstrated. How to strengthen your application Start with a role-specific CV. Your first page should make the relevant practice area immediately visible. If you are applying for a real-estate role, a recruiter should not have to reach the final page to discover that you have led title-diligence exercises. If you are applying to an M&A team, your transaction experience should dominate the document rather than academic achievements from several years ago. Your application email should be equally disciplined. Use the exact job code where one is provided, follow the subject-line convention stated by the firm, and attach the correct version of your CV. Do not send the same generic cover note to corporate, finance and disputes teams. Even a short email can demonstrate that you have read the vacancy and understand why your experience is relevant. JSA’s careers page also expressly asks candidates to use the prescribed route for applications. Candidates should avoid repeated follow-ups with individual partners or sending unsolicited reminders when the careers process already specifies how applications will be handled. Following the stated process is itself part of professional judgment. Step-by-step: how to apply Open JSA’s official job portal. Filter by practice area, location and experienced-lawyer roles. Open the exact vacancy. Read the current PQE, practice requirement, job code and description. Do not rely only on social-media summaries. Tailor your CV. Prioritise matters and skills relevant to that team and remove low-value material that crowds out your experience. Use the job code correctly. Where JSA provides an email subject line or code, reproduce it accurately. Apply through the official mechanism. Some listings include a direct application form; others also provide recruitment contact instructions. Prepare before an interview call arrives. Be ready to discuss the matters on your CV, your exact role, technical concepts from your practice area and the reason for your proposed move. View Live Openings → Why this hiring round matters for lateral candidates The spread of current vacancies is notable because it is not limited to one narrow practice. The live jobs page includes positions across corporate transactions, finance, disputes, real estate and employment, and across more than one office. That creates opportunities for candidates at different stages of practice, but it also means candidates need to be selective. A lateral move is usually strongest when it advances at least one of three things: the quality of matters you handle, the depth of the practice you are building, or the responsibility you can take on. Brand name matters, but it should not be the only criterion. Read the role carefully, understand what the team appears to need, and ask whether that work advances the lawyer you want to become over the next three to five years. For senior associates in particular, the interview conversation is likely to go beyond technical legal knowledge. Teams will often want to understand whether you can run a workstream independently, communicate with clients, manage juniors, coordinate across parties and deliver under transaction or litigation timelines. Your CV should provide evidence of those capabilities rather than simply listing matters. Before you hit “Apply” Spend ten minutes performing a final quality check. Make sure your dates are consistent, role titles are accurate, formatting is clean, and each important claim can be explained if challenged in an interview. Remove confidential client information where disclosure would be inappropriate. Check the official portal once more to make sure the role remains listed and that the eligibility criteria have not changed. Most importantly, do not self-reject merely because you do not match every preferred attribute. Distinguish between a mandatory requirement and a preference. If the role requires a particular number of years, Bar enrolment, law-firm background or practice-specific experience, take that seriously. But where the description expresses a preference and your core experience is relevant, a well-positioned application can still be worth making. Build your legal career with better preparation.
